Born in Chicago, Roger Sperry was educated at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1952, where he had done postdoctoral research with Nobel laureate Herbert A. Hauptman
He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. From 1957 to 1971, Dr. Sperry was professor at the California Institute for Medical Research in San Francisco, where he was also director of the Sperry Neuropsychiatric Institute.
He is a founder of the Society for Neuroscience, former chairman of its steering committee, and has served as president of the Society's Psychobiology Section. Dr. Sperry is co-director of the Neurosciences Institute at UCLA, where he is also affiliated with the Jules Stein Eye Institute and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
